External Retaining Ring

An external retaining ring, also known as an external retaining clip or external snap ring, is a type of fastener used to secure components onto a shaft or in a groove with an external, outward-facing profile. These rings consist of a circular or semi-circular piece of metal with open ends, and they are designed to fit into a groove or groove-like feature on the outside of a shaft or other cylindrical object. The primary function of an external retaining ring is to hold components in place by exerting radial pressure against the groove's walls, preventing the assembly from moving along the shaft or becoming dislodged. They are commonly used in a wide range of applications, including automotive, industrial machinery, and household appliances, to secure bearings, wheels, pulleys, gears, and other parts. External retaining rings come in various sizes, materials (typically steel or stainless steel), and configurations to accommodate different shaft diameters and application requirements. They are a convenient and cost-effective solution for maintaining the position and functionality of components within various mechanical systems.
